Road construction season is kicking into high gear, and state transportation officials say drivers have to be partners in the push for work zone safety.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is issuing its annual reminder to motorists to pay attention, slow down, and avoid distractions while driving in work zones.
The theme of this year’s campaign is “You play a role in work zone safety. Work with us.” Each year, Illinois averages around 6,000 work zone crashes, resulting in 1,500 injuries.
So far in 2023, 32 people have died in work zone crashes in Illinois – including two highway workers.
