A new law signed by Governor JB Pritzker on Friday ensures that the differently-abled will be as safe during school emergencies as anyone else.

Sponsored by State Senator Paul Faraci (D-Champaign), the new law, “will ensure that families know that the safety plan for their child is well-documented during their annual IEP meetings, and they will know the expectation during drills so they can better prepare the child…”

The legislation provides extra accommodations for students who require as much, such as noise-canceling earwear for students with sound sensitivity and requires such accommodations be included in the child’s Individualized Education Program or IEP.
