Despite some rain earlier in the week, more than 99% of Illinois is now abnormally dry or under drought conditions – including all of Sangamon County.

For the first time this year, most of Sangamon County is listed as abnormally dry, which is considered an “early warning” of drought. The eastern tip of the county is classified as a “moderate” drought.

Roughly 15% of the state is now under a severe drought, including the Chicago area and much of north central Illinois. Springfield has only had a third of an inch of rain so far this month, nearly two inches less than normal.
