Springfield’s City Council will vote next week on a proposal to spend more than $20 million on the construction of three new firehouses.

The three new stations would be built at 11th and Ash – Lawrence and Rickard – and on Spaulding Orchard Road.

Fire Station Number 6 at 11th and Ash would also include space for a community room and a police substation.

Ward 10 Alderman Ralph Hanauer questioned the additional expense involved with those add-ons, but fire officials and the project contractor say the expense of redoing the design means that any savings from eliminating those features would be minimal.
