The dispute continues over how involved Springfield aldermen were in the discussion over whether to forgive a portion of the debt owed to the city by the financially troubled Wyndham City Centre downtown.

Mayor Jim Langfelder’s administration ultimately forgave about a quarter-million dollars of the debt owed to City Water Light and Power, months after the issue was reportedly discussed with aldermen at a closed-door meeting in November of 2021.

Alderman Ralph Hanauer recently stated in a letter to the Illinois Times that there was, quote, “never discussion anywhere” about debt forgiveness for the Wyndham, a characterization disputed by Alderman Joe McMenamin and others.

Hanauer declines to comment further on his statement until the City Council votes to release the audio and minutes of that executive session meeting.

The issue is expected to be discussed during Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.
