Illinois lawmakers have approved new legislation to protect abortion providers and doctors who offer “gender-affirming” care.

The measure approved in the final hours of the lame duck legislative session is also aimed at preserving access to abortion procedures in Illinois for women traveling here from states with much tighter restrictions. The bill expands the type of abortion procedures that can be performed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants.

It also creates a “shield law” to protect information about abortions here from lawsuits and subpoenas initiated in other states, and extends that same protection for doctors providing care on gender issues.
