The Springfield City Council has approved a $4.5 million project to convert parts of two downtown streets to two-way traffic… despite safety concerns raised by some of the people who will be impacted by the change.

The project will reconfigure Fourth Street from South Grand to Dodge, and Adams Street from 6th to 9th, and will also modernize downtown traffic signals. During a brief discussion at Wednesday’s meeting, Alderman Joe McMenamin noted that the changes would impact the new YMCA and the Springfield Art Association, raising concerns about how two-way traffic would affect vehicles entering and exiting those parking lots.

Public Works director Nate Bottom vows the city will assess the situation and make modifications if necessary.
