A Springfield police officer who was under investigation for alleged racist and anti-Semitic remarks on social media has resigned.

Aaron Nichols submitted his resignation, effective immediately, in a one-sentence memo to Police Chief Ken Scarlette Tuesday, delivered just before Nichols was supposed to meet with internal affairs investigators. Nichols had been placed on unpaid leave and was stripped of his police powers after the allegations against him came to light last week. Scarlette says in a note to aldermen that he has no tolerance for what he calls the “destructive behavior” involved in the allegations against Nichols.

In a statement, the department says it remains committed to a full and thorough investigation of Nichols’ comments and actions.
