First-degree murder charges have been filed in connection with a New Year’s Eve assault that left a Springfield bar owner dead.

27-year-old Dalton McDermott was arrested last week and charged with aggravated battery in the altercation at Parkway Pub on December 31st. The 80-year-old bar owner, Angelo Manci, was critically injured and another man was slightly hurt.

Manci died of his injuries the day after McDermott was taken into custody, and Sangamon County State’s Attorney Dan Wright has now added the first-degree murder charges and two more counts of aggravated battery against McDermott. McDermott remains in custody and will make another court appearance Thursday.
