District 186 is laying out options to add metal detectors to the city’s middle and high schools in the months ahead.

The decision comes after several violent incidents at city schools last year, including the stabbing death of a student outside Lanphier High School in November. Superintendent Jennifer Gill says she wants a system that will let students move through quickly and that will detect a variety of dangerous items, not just firearms. Gill is eyeing a package that would allow for three lanes of students to pass through the devices as they enter high school buildings, and two lanes in most of the middle schools.

One proposal under consideration would cost more than $1.2 million over a four-year period, with the money coming from the special sales tax for school improvements.
