Residents of Illinois are preparing not only for the emergence of millions of cicadas from their underground homes this year but another species is set to return to the state – red-winged blackbirds.

The red-winged blackbird is an aggressive bird species that has been known to dive-bomb anyone who comes near its nest.

Female red-winged blackbirds make their return trip to Illinois in March to rejoin male redwings that have spent the winter in large roosts in the area.
