An Illinois state task force has advanced a proposal to let voters decide whether to use ranked-choice voting for elected offices in the state.
If approved by the full legislature, ranked-choice voting could be used by Illinois voters by 2028.
Under ranked-choice voting, voters will have the opportunity to rank candidates according to most favorite to least favorite.
If one candidate has more than 50 percent of the final vote, they win, but if no one captures 50 percent, that candidate’s votes are moved to their second choice, and the process continues until someone wins a majority of the vote.
