The Sangamon Mass Transit District’s bus fleet is about to get an upgrade.
The District has just announced that it has ordered eight new low-emission buses fueled by compressed natural gas; they are expected to arrive in the spring, which will mean that more than half the buses used by SMTD are low-emissions.
The District’s goal is to complete the transition to low-emission vehicles by 2031. The hybrid buses will cost just over $900,000 and will be bought using federal grants.
