WMAY’s Last Night-in-Sports Report: 08/02/2023

The Chicago Cubs offense exploded for 20 runs last night at Wrigley as the Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds 20-9 in the final. Dansby Swanson homered twice and drove in 5 to lead the Cub’s offense.

Cody Bellinger, Nico Hoerner, Miguel Amaya, Michael Tauchman, and Patrick Wisdom also went deep for the Cubs in the contest. Justin Steele went 6 innings to eran his 12th win of the season; Cubs and Red go at it again tonight at Wrigley.

The St. Louis Cardinals sent SS Paul Dejong to Toronto and pitcher Jack Flaherty to Baltimore in exchange for prospects before yesterday’s MLB trade deadline. On the field last night, the Cards fell to the visiting Minnesota Twins at Busch 3-2 in the final. Miles Mikolas was the tough-luck loser for the Cards. Tyler O’Neil homered for the Cards in the contest. The Cards and Twins battle again tonight at Busch.

The Chicago White Sox, who traded Jake Burger and relief pitcher Kenyan Middleton in separate moves yesterday, got shutout by the Rangers in Texas last night 2-0 the final. The Sox offense managed just 3 hits in the ball game. The Sox will remain in Texas tonight to once again take on the Rangers.

Minor League Baseball, the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes fell in Danville last night to the Dans 7-6 in the final. The Shoes are in Quincy tonight to take on the Gems.
