High-speed rail has come to Illinois. Monday marked the start of regular 110-mile-per-hour Amtrak service between Chicago and St. Louis.

Governor JB Pritzker marked the occasion with an event in Chicago, in which he said the $2 billion multi-year project to revamp the rail corridor will mean shorter travel times, along with greater safety and reliability.

Amtrak schedules have been adjusted to account for the faster trip through Illinois.

The passenger trains will run at 110 miles an hour along 80% of the route through the state, but will move more slowly through metro areas like Springfield.
