A new state grant means more Sangamon County high school students will get a chance to explore careers in the construction trades.

Lincoln Land Community College received the $200,000 grant to expand the Multi-Craft Core Curriculum, or MC3, program in conjunction with the Regional Office of Education.

The expanded program allows students from 11 high schools in communities around the county to attend Lincoln Land for two hours each day, learning about construction apprenticeships and meeting with contractors, trade unions, and industry leaders.

The program provides training in various construction skills. It concludes with a paid internship at a job site, and students receive free tools, work boots, and protective equipment.
