Clinical depression impacts nearly one in five people across the country – but a new CDC study shows the numbers in Illinois overall, and Sangamon County specifically, fall below that national average.

The study is based on a survey asking people to report if they’ve ever had a diagnosis of depression in their lifetime.

The CDC study finds higher numbers of cases in women, younger people, and people affected by poverty or lack of education.

Almost every Illinois county was below the national average, whereas most surrounding states were at or above that threshold.

In Sangamon County, just over 16% of people reported having received such a diagnosis, the lowest of any neighboring county.
