Two Springfield aldermen are frustrated that a majority of their City Council colleagues voted to table several ordinances they supported – with one alderman even suggesting that maybe his ward should consider seceding from the city.
The new City Council, with three new members joining seven incumbents, voted to table several ordinances Tuesday night, including one to require landlords to register rental properties with the city and another to change licensing fees for video gaming terminals.
Ward 2’s Shawn Gregory and Ward 3’s Roy Williams, Jr., say it looks to them like the move was a power play to show them who’s calling the shots now.
Gregory tells WMAY if aldermen are going to “play games” with his ward’s interests, maybe his ward shouldn’t be part of the city anymore.
But Alderman Ralph Hanauer contends the tabled ordinances were introduced to retaliate against supporters of Mayor Misty Buscher, and says the City Council just wants a fresh start.
