The estimated cost of a state law expanding health care coverage for undocumented people in the state continues to grow.

State officials now estimate that providing that care to adults age 42 and over could cost more than $1 billion in the next fiscal year, far exceeding the $220 million estimate contained in Governor JB Pritzker’s initial budget proposal.

Republicans say Illinois cannot afford to provide that level of care to noncitizens, a level of care they say no other state provides.
