WMAY’s Last Night-in-Sports Report: 04/28/2023

Eight straight losses now for the Chicago White Sox as they got blown out at home at the Rate yesterday by the Tampa Bay Rays 14-5 the final. Jake Burger homered and drove in 2 for the Sox in the loss, who are now 7-19 on the season. Sox and Rays tangle again tonight at the Rate.

Meanwhile, on the North Side of town, the Chicago Cubs defeated the San Diego Padres at Wrigley 5-2. Dansby Swanson, Nelson Velazquez, and Eric Hosmer all homered for the Cubs in the victory. The Cubs are in Miami tonight to start a series with the Marlins.

The St. Louis Cardinals salvaged the last game of a 4-game series with the Giants in San Francisco yesterday with a 6-0 shutout victory. Miles Mikolas earned the win on the mound throwing six and a third innings of shutout ball. Alec Burleson and Paul DeJong went deep for the Cards in the contest. The Cards are in LA tonight to start a series with the Dodgers.

NFL Draft last night Alabama QB Bryce Young went number 1 overall to the Carolina Panthers. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears traded down for a 2ndtime as they swapped the 9th overall pick with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Bears got the 10th overall selection in this year’s draft as well as a 4th-round pick in the 2024 draft in the trade. With the 10th overall selection, the Bears took Offensive Tackle Darnell Wright out of Tennessee.
