Illinois Republican lawmakers are calling for a “pause” in a program that provides health benefits to undocumented people in the state.

The cost of the program has exploded in recent months, with an expected increase of $768 million next year, up 348% over the current fiscal year.

A recent report indicates the state Department of Healthcare and Family Services underestimated both the number of new enrollees and the cost of their care.

The Pritzker administration says it continues to work on an overall balanced budget for next year to address those increased costs.
