One person is dead after a house fire Thursday night in Springfield.
Firefighters were called to the home in the 1000 block of West Edwards just after 7:30 pm. A caller to 911 reported that an elderly woman lived in the home.
When crews arrived, they found smoke and fire coming from the first floor. A neighbor had kicked in the front door and pounded on windows to see if anyone was inside but got no response. Crews were able to contain the fire to the first-floor kitchen and back porch area.
They found the woman deceased in the room where the fire had started. Investigators are now working to determine the cause of the fire as well as of the woman’s death.
