Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is signing onto a brief in support of a transgender female student seeking to compete on a girls’ athletic team at her school.

Raoul is one of 18 attorneys general to join that “friend of the court” brief in support of the student’s challenge to a West Virginia law prohibiting transgender students from competing on teams consistent with their gender identity.

Raoul says that law violates the rights of transgender students to have equal opportunity and access to participate in school athletics.

He notes that transgender youth are far more likely than their peers to face discrimination, harassment, and even assault.
