State officials are taking public comments on its plans to use $75 million in federal funds to address safety concerns at abandoned mine sites across the state.

The Department of Natural Resources has identified 55 locations where work is needed. That includes the old Happy Hollow Mining Company, an active mine in Pleasant Plains from roughly 1909 to 1949.

The state wants to seal an opening to the mine to prevent unauthorized access.
