Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and his counterparts in 20 other states and the District of Columbia are urging two automakers to step up efforts to help prevent thefts of the vehicles they produced.

The move comes in response to a dramatic increase in thefts of Kia and Hyundai brands. Many of those companies’ vehicles from model years 2010 to 2021 did not come with anti-theft immobilizers, which prevent them from operating without a key or key fob.

Kia and Hyundai recently announced an effort to upgrade the software in those vehicles to address the problem, but Raoul and the other AGs say the plan is insufficient and are calling on the companies to speed up the effort.
