It could be a lengthy debate next week when the Springfield City Council considers whether to approve more than $18 million in TIF district funds for renovations to the Wyndham City Centre downtown.

The owner of the 30-story hotel wants to convert it to a mix of hotel rooms, under the Delta Marriott flag, and around 200 apartments, along with the creation of an observation deck and food court at the top of the building.

The Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance and the city’s Community Economic Development Commission support the project, saying it will preserve needed hotel rooms and conference space for downtown conventions.

But other hotels are objecting – the owner of the Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn Express says it’s not fair to give one hotel a competitive advantage over others.
