The date is now set for a project that could mean major disruptions for drivers heading into and out of downtown Springfield.

Starting April 5th, both Jefferson and Madison Streets will be closed between 9th and 11th for the construction of new railroad underpasses as part of the ongoing rail consolidation project.

The closure will last more than a year, with the new underpasses scheduled to open in the summer of 2024. Drivers will be directed to detour to Carpenter Street.

Even so, the city is advising drivers to allow for extra time to get around that area – or to consider alternate routes altogether.
