The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is paying tribute to Illinois military members who lost their lives in the first Persian Gulf War.

Ceremonies were held earlier this week in Springfield, marking the 32nd anniversary of the cease-fire in the conflict.

Operation Desert Storm had begun just weeks earlier when U.S. and coalition forces began the campaign to expel Iraqi forces that had invaded Kuwait.

18 service personnel from Illinois would make the ultimate sacrifice during that 1991 campaign.

Several Desert Storm veterans were on hand for the ceremonies at the Illinois State Military Museum.
