A new study finds thousands of Sangamon County homes do not have access to reliable high-speed Internet – but fixing that problem could be expensive in the short term.

A consultant hired by the Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance found that 7% of homes in the county have no broadband service at all, but others have slow or unreliable service.

Recent federal grants will provide some new services in rural areas of the county, but will still leave many homes unserved.

State grants may also be available to cover some of the cost of a new fiber network, but additional funding sources will likely be needed for a project that could cost well over $40 million.

Information from a presentation to the county board can be read below.
