Springfield aldermen will vote next week on a request for TIF funds to help pay for the demolition of two long-vacant downtown buildings.
The proposal is coming from Horace Mann Insurance, which recently purchased and renovated a separate historic building on the same block – and wants to knock down the vacant buildings to create green space and off-street parking for the historic building and other nearby businesses.
Horace Mann says the two buildings have been vacant for more than a decade and have numerous structural problems, as well as mold and asbestos issues.
It’s requesting $600,000 in TIF funds, or roughly one-third of the total cost of demolition.
