Illinois State Police are undergoing a significant restructuring that the agency says will ensure 24-7 coverage in all 102 counties of the state.

Instead of the current structure of 21 patrol districts, ISP will move to 11 patrol “troops.”

The system was set up on the advice of consultants – and is modeled after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s personnel allocation model.

With the switch to the network of 11 patrol “troops,” the agency will roll out new license plates for state police squad cars, each one bearing the number of its troop and also displaying the state seal, which had been featured on ISP cars from the 1930s to the 1960s.

The changes take effect March 1.
