Illinois State Police are expanding a training program to help troopers deal with individuals suffering from mental illness.

The 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team training has already been provided to 51 state troopers, and 13 of them have completed an additional 24-hour “train the trainer” course.

Those 13 will now provide the Crisis Intervention Team training to ISP officers statewide.

Crisis Intervention Team training helps police work with mental health professionals and family members to de-escalate situations, reduce the risk of injury in police interactions, and help steer individuals to mental health treatment.
