U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski are warning that a prolonged fight over the federal debt ceiling could be disastrous for the nation’s economy.

A showdown is looming over whether to extend the debt ceiling, with the Republican majority in the U.S. House indicating that it wants any extension to be linked to cuts in spending and entitlements.

Durbin and Budzinski are both Central Illinois Democrats. They both say they want to work on a bipartisan basis to reach a deal, but say Republicans should not use the threat of a debt default to force damaging cuts that would hurt working families.
