More than 30 years after the problem was first identified, an issue caused by leaking underground fuel storage tanks on Springfield city property has finally been resolved.

The tanks were located on city Public Works property on North 17th Street, and concerns about leaking fuel were first reported to the Illinois EPA in 1990. The city hired a firm to remove the tanks and address cleanup of the site, but the city says work on the project stopped in 2002.

The EPA discovered the open cases during a review in 2021. But the city says as a “token of thanks” for city support over the years, the EPA took it upon itself to finish the cleanup and close the case files.
