If you’re feeling sticker shock from the cost of renewing your Illinois license plate sticker, a candidate for Illinois secretary of state wants to provide some relief.

Republican Dan Brady is proposing a one-year reduction in the cost of license plate stickers. Right now, a sticker renewal ranges from $151 to $164 per year, but Brady would cut that cost by $50 during 2023.

The move would slice about $70 million out of the office’s nearly $500 million budget, but Brady says he could make up much of that cost with belt-tightening like renegotiating facility leases and finding lower-cost options to mailing out license plates all over the state.
