Sangamon County is on pace again this year for a substantially higher number of total deaths than the county saw in the years before the COVID pandemic.
Coroner Jim Allmon says through the first eight months of 2022, Sangamon County saw 1989 total deaths… putting it on pace for nearly 3,000 fatalities by year’s end. That would be just below the all-time record set in 2020 of 3,029 deaths.
That’s hundreds more per year than the county saw prior to the pandemic. COVID deaths are down somewhat this year compared to 2020, and Allmon says he isn’t seeing any unusual trends to account for the elevated death totals.
