Planning Commission Recommendation On Cannabis Zoning Could Be Weeks Away

It could be weeks before the Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission comes back with a recommendation on zoning rules for cannabis craft grow operations.

The current rules require a setback of at least 15-hundred feet from homes, schools, and day cares, which excludes most industrial park sites in the city. Mayor Jim Langfelder has asked the commission to offer its opinion on whether a shorter setback would be appropriate, and a presentation to the City Council is expected in mid- to late-October.

The final decision would be up to aldermen, who have expressed reluctance to let those growing operations start up any closer to a home or school. At least one craft grow business says it’s too long to wait for a decision, and is now actively looking at other communities to set up shop.
