Thursday marks the start of the application process for low-income households in Sangamon County to receive assistance with their energy bills.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program… or LIHEAP… is open to all households with incomes at or below 200-percent of the federal poverty level. Unlike years past, there are no groups given special priority, so all eligible households can apply starting Thursday. Applications for help with utility bills and reconnections will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through May of 2023. Assistance with water and sewer bills is also available.

Applications will be taken at the county’s Community Resource office inside the health department building on South Grand Avenue East in Springfield.
