A showdown is looming for control of the Democratic Party of Illinois.

Party leaders meet in Springfield next weekend to vote on whether to retain Congresswoman Robin Kelly as party chair. But now a Democratic state lawmaker, Representative Elizabeth Hernandez, says she will challenge Kelly. Hernandez has the backing of Governor JB Pritzker, who opposed Kelly for the chairmanship last year because her role as a federal officeholder limits her ability to fundraise for state candidates.

But Kelly has the support of another top Democrat, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin.
