Gas prices in Springfield have fallen below $5 a gallon… but the average price for regular unleaded is still the highest ever seen locally over a Fourth of July weekend.

As of Friday, gas was going for $4.95 a gallon on average, more than 30 cents a gallon below the record high set less than a month ago. But prices at the pump are still taking a big bite out of holiday travel expenses.

The local price of gas heading into Independence Day one year ago was $3.24 a gallon on average.
