Governor JB Pritzker is touting a package of modest tax relief that takes effect Friday with the start of the new fiscal year.

Pritzker says the tax breaks approved by lawmakers in the spring will provide some help to families struggling with soaring inflation. The measures include a one-year suspension of the state’s one-percent sales tax on groceries, and a six-month hold on implementing a two-cent-per-gallon increase in the gas tax. There will also be a ten-day sales tax holiday on back-to-school clothing and school supplies in August.

The package also includes an expansion of the earned income tax credit, and property and income tax rebates, with those checks going out starting in September.
