A Republican candidate for Congress wants to beef up federal funding to help local police departments recruit and hire new officers.

13th District GOP candidate Jesse Reising held a roundtable with area police Thursday in Riverton. He wants to make changes to the federal COPS program, which was established in the 1990s to fund more police positions.

Reising says a lot of that funding has been shifted elsewhere, and he wants to move it back to be a steady, reliable source of revenue to support local police salaries.
