Governor JB Pritzker has signed legislation aimed at addressing the recent surge in organized retail theft.

The new law creates a formal crime of Organized Retail Theft, imposing felony charges on those who work with others to carry out a retail theft of $300 or more from one or more locations. Supporters of the new law say such organized thefts… and the resale of the stolen items online… can help fund other criminal enterprises like gun and drug trafficking, and also drive up prices for consumers.

The new law takes effect on January 1st, 2023.
