The non-profit owners of the former Pillsbury Mills site have signed a contract for the Phase Two environmental study that they hope will open the door for grants to pay for cleanup of the site and demolition of the factory.

Moving Pillsbury Forward entered into the agreement Thursday with Illinois-based Fehr Graham Environmental Engineers, which has an office in Springfield. The cost of the $229,000 study is expected to be split between the Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance and the City of Springfield.

Crews will look for soil contamination, asbestos in the abandoned structures, and lead paint on site, among other hazards. A final report is expected in September or October.
