Springfield’s getting a new state-of-the-art Air National Guard facility… and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says it’s because of the return of congressional earmarks.

That’s the process by which members of Congress can set aside a certain amount of federal spending for projects in their home state. With that process added back into the federal budget, Durbin and fellow Illinois Democrat Tammy Duckworth allocated $10 million for the new Base Civil Engineer Complex. The facility will consolidate seven existing buildings on the base at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport into one much more modern structure.

It’s set for completion and opening in 2024.
