Online crime is costing Illinoisans big money, according to the latest statistics from the FBI.

The bureau’s Internet Crime Complaint Center registered nearly 18,000 complaints from Illinois residents in 2021, with total losses reported at $185 million, or an average of more than $10,000 per complaint. The biggest category of complaint was labeled as business e-mail compromise schemes, costing companies more than $86 million. Investment fraud and data breaches were also common complaints last year.

FBI Special Agent in Charge for the Springfield office, David Nanz, says combatting cybercrime remains a top priority for the agency.
