The Springfield Fire Department is investigating the cause of a blaze that damaged a vacant commercial building.

Firefighters responded to a call of smoke in the area in the 600 block of East Princeton around 2:45 Saturday morning. A Chatham Fire Department ambulance crew that was returning from a call discovered the fire and directed Springfield crews to the scene. The building had at one time been used for mine safety training, but in recent years had apparently been subject to frequent trespassing. Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the rear of the building.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury but did not seek medical treatment.
