Even as it continues to investigate complaints about operations at its animal shelter, Sangamon County is reminding staff not to go directly to the press or social media with such complaints.

Animal control officers were recently directed to sign a policy document instructing them to follow the chain of command and make such complaints through their immediate supervisor. A follow-up document clarified that animal control officers could make complaints to regulatory agencies as well, and would be protected under whistleblower laws.

A number of animal control employees last year signed a letter of no-confidence in shelter director Greg Largent. Largent remains in that position.
