It’s been a source of significant drama on the floor of the Illinois House in recent weeks…but now the House has dropped the requirement for members to wear masks while in session.

Several GOP lawmakers were repeatedly removed from the House floor in recent days for defying the mask requirement that was put in place in the early weeks of the pandemic. But after consulting with his members, Democratic House Speaker Chris Welch proposed ending the mask requirement, and the change in House rules passed with only one “no” vote.

The Illinois Senate is also ending its mask mandate, but says masks are still encouraged on the floor.
