Crews are investigating the cause of a fire that caused $40,000 damage to the Wyndham Hotel in downtown Springfield and forced the temporary evacuation of guests around 2am Wednesday.
Fire Chief Brandon Blough says it appears the fire began in a basement storage room.
Automatic sprinklers prevented the flames from spreading, but created a lot of smoke that had to be ventilated before guests could return to their rooms.
